Joshua Study 1.

Ready for amazing things

Read Joshua Chapter 1

Joshua has just taken over the responsibility of leading the Israelites into the promised land. Moses had brought the people out of Egypt and captivity and to the borders of the promised land - Canaan. Moses has died and Joshua now carries on the job.

This chapter is to leaders and to those being led. God has important messages to say which are relevant today whether you are in Christian leadership of any sort or part of a team.

Encouragement to Leaders

Read Ch 1 v 5 ‘As I was with Moses so I will be with you - I will never leave you or forsake you’

God says - I proved myself to Moses - remember ! Now I will prove myself to you – I’ll not fail you - trust me !

Read Ch 1 v 6 ’Be strong and very courageous because you will lead the people to inherit the land’

God says to Joshua - Be strong and brave – it’s going to be tough BUT you will lead the people. I’ve a job for you to do so be ready.

To those involved in leadership.

Are you frightened of the job ahead in leadership ? We see the job perhaps been done by someone else before but now it=s our turn - help !!

Q. How do you feel about God's promise in v5 ?

Q. What does this mean to you ?

        Total trust in God ?

Be an example - people are watching you ?

Don't be afraid to stick your neck out for me ?

The need to LEAD. What does this mean ?

Confirmation of Joshua as leader.

Read v16 - 18 The people respond to Joshua

We will follow you BUT - v 18b "Only be strong & courageous"

Don't let us down

Get a grip & lead us

Q How do you think Joshua felt when the people said this to him ?

Very proud and confident in him self ?

Remembered God's promise in v 5

Encouragement to those in the team

How do we know where we are being led is right ?

Ch 3 v 1 - 4 "move out from your positions & follow"

Leave the familiar - comfortable - safe - etc

God is on the move !!

Q How keen are we to move out from our familiar ways or structures or formats ?

How do we know where we are going ?

Ch 3 v 4 "You will know which way to go, since you have never been this way before"

Totally new - unfamiliar - strange - maybe frightening.

2 Cor 12 v 10 - "when I am weak then I am strong"

Q Are we prepared to be vulnerable and unsure as we step out for God ?

What are the places and situations God wants you to go to or be involved in as you follow Him ? Are you ready for such a challenge ?

Prepare yourselves

Ch 3 v 5 "Consecrate yourselves for tomorrow the Lord will do amazing things among you"

Consecration  is.......
                    making yourself right before God
becoming Holy - dealing with the sin in our lives.
sorting out our relationship with God

We need to do this ourselves. - "Consecrate yourselves" I must want to be holy - an act of my will - God will not force holiness upon us.

This process needs to take the proper time and be sincere.

THEN "tomorrow the Lord will do amazing things among you"

Isn't this exciting and fantastic ! ! God wants to do amazing things among you.

Q Are we ready to move out and trust God to do amazing things ?

Lesson - Trust me - move out in faith - deal with the sin - the Lord will do amazing things.

Maybe need first to spend time to consecrate ourselves.

Confess our sin and areas of failure and disobedience. Ask God to fill us with his Spirits power.

Trust God that even through our weakness and vulnerability he will use us in amazing ways.
